~ EXCERPT ~

Ashara stood frozen, eyes lowered like prey that’s been caught by a predator.
“Release me,” he repeated.
“Cass, leave her alone,” Zales said telepathically, sounding weary.
“She’s the one,” Cass said. “I need her to sever this bond between us.”
“Maybe, but you scare her, and it’s been a long night,” Zales said with eyes closed.
With a frustrated snarl, Cass went and sat at the opposite end of the couch from him.
He was so bloody tired. For so long, he’d dreamed of finding the one holding him to life. He’d plotted his revenge, imagining what he would do once he finally found her. He would make her pay, make her hurt, just like he hurt. Then he’d break their connection and send her to hell. It had been all that kept him alive for the last ten years.
But now, he couldn’t do it. No matter what he wanted to believe, she wasn’t some evil sorceress and she looked like she could be blown over by a stiff breeze.
Ashara cautiously at back down on the love seat across from him.
Cass’s body filled with need, making him want to swear. He hated his reaction, along with the sudden desire to protect her. Then there was the pain in her eyes, and her fear when she looked at him. She’d been a victim and that made him angry as well. He didn’t want to like her, desire her, or care at all. He had nothing left to give.
His thoughts turned to his mate Maya. How he wished to join her. Yet as he closed his eyes, Ashara filled his mind. He imagined her naked and under him. Cass let out a low growl and adjusted his position.
As the others in the room slept. Cass looked at Ashara who was curled into a tight ball. Every now and then she’d give a little shiver, and even with her eyes closed, she looked bruised and worn-out. All of a sudden, something in Cass softened.
Zales’s voice filled his head. “Saber rescued her from Darry Caverns where her son, Commander Casin, kept her prisoner.”
Her own son did that to her?
When Zales was once again asleep, Cass rose, but as he started past Ashara, he paused. Then he grabbed the blanket off the couch and gently covered her.
Satisfied, he made his way over to the tunnel and walked through the waterfall until he stood outside.
He glanced up at the rock wall towering behind him, then down at the placid lake over five-hundred-feet below. Despite the sharp white spears rising from the water, it appeared so calm, and completely opposite of his churning emotions. Finally, he  gazed at the first of Tartaria’s suns breaking over the horizon. How long since he sat and watched a sunrise?
Thoughts back on Ashara, an unreasonable anger surged once again.
He shoved off the ledge. Power tingled throughout him as he rushed headlong toward the water far below, and he could feel that detested tether strengthening. It pulled, tugged, drew him, and pissed him off more. His dragon struggled for freedom, but he held the shift back.
The lake grew close fast, and he clearly saw the jagged white crystal shards projecting from the pale-blue surface. Sharp, deadly prongs. The pain would be brutal. And he wanted it. Needed it.
But suddenly, a white-hot bolt of lightning pierced him. His magic exploded and Cass howled as he shifted instantly. It wasn’t the result he was looking for, but the pain involved worked.
He roared, and rose into the sky, soaking up the energy that pierced his scaled body, bolt after bolt. Thunder boomed, though there wasn’t a single cloud in sight.
