“Annie, this is Ram. Ram, this is Annie.”

She felt an awareness that told her this man meant something to her. “Pleased to meet you,” She said and held out her hand. Ram gripped it and a shock went through her whole body. Her eyes widened in surprise and so did his.

“Is it hot in here or is it just me?” Cam asked with a nervous chuckle.

“Cam, excuse us for a moment and shut the door on your way out,” Ram instructed.

Annie thought that it was weird for Ram to throw Cam out of his office like that. She heard the door close and now they were alone. Ram used her hand to pull her up against him and his arms wrapped around her. His lips dropped to hers and he kissed her gently. “You feel it too, don’t you?” He asked.

She nodded. This man was hers. It seemed her spell had worked after all. Whatever the spell had done, had probably caused him to be here. How would he feel when he found out what she had done? It couldn’t be too bad if it had led them to each other, right?

He kissed her again, except this time it wasn’t sweet or gentle. It was a claiming kiss that left her in no doubt as to who she belonged to or what he wanted. It left her feeling raw and needy. It also made her wish they were alone in bed anywhere they wouldn’t be disturbed.

“I woke up this morning nude on a beach. Do you know anything about that?” He asked.

Annie did as he wanted. She got in the middle so he would have room to position himself any way he wanted. Nothing was going to stop them now. Ram got on the bed and moved on top of her. He leaned on his forearms keeping his weight off her and fencing her in so she couldn’t escape.

“I’ve got you now, Annie, and I’m never letting you go.” Ram whispered in her ear. His hot breath hitting her made goosebumps rise and she writhed with need. It took almost nothing on his part to turn her on.

“Take me, I’m yours.” Trite? Maybe, but also oh so true.

Lowering his chest to where his body touched hers, his mouth claimed hers in a deep kiss where his tongue licked and tasted every nook and cranny of her mouth. Heat seemed to emanate from him, more than she had expected. Annie had heard many shifters ran hot, but Ram was smoking.

His chest rumbled either with desire or the needs of his beast. It made her wonder for the hundredth time what that beast was. Rare? Without a doubt, but what could possibly justify this level of identity safeguarding? Ram began to work his way down her body licking and nipping, causing the ability to form clear thoughts to leave her.

By the time he made it to the space between her thighs, Annie was a primitive creature feeling only the pleasure he gave her. The sounds she made were animalistic as she spread her legs wide and arched up toward him. Her fingers were twisted in his hair, holding him in place.

“More.” She grunted and groaned.

Ram slid one of his large hands under her ass and cupped her cheeks, tilting her up slightly. The position opened her up further to him. With his other hand, he slid a finger into her hot, wet pussy even as his tongue worked her clit. He added a second finger and finally a third to stretch and prepare her.

Closing his eyes, Atreides felt the Tide calling him back into the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

He stood and walked toward the water’s edge. The sole of his leather shoes skidded on the slick pebbles of the beach. Atreides inhaled the salty sprays, filling his lungs with the familiar scent that sent him back in time. When he was a child, he used to swim with the dolphins populating the coast. Pollution and global warming had changed the marine landscape, robbing the wild seabed of its rich ecosystem, but its beauty was still undeniable.

Atreides kicked one shoe off, then the other. His naked feet touched the smooth rocks that composed the bed of the beach. Foamy water lapped at his skin. One brief glance around confirmed him he was alone.

At three o’clock in the morning, no other swimmer had made his way down the path that hugged the medieval castle of Santa Marinella. It was a fortuitous coincidence Atreides had every intention to exploit. Tourists had fled the heat of Rome and took refuge in the city, but the ones who weren’t sleeping were dancing the night away. That worked just fine. Atreides felt he was too old to gyrate at the rhythm of music resembling industrial noise and had lost any familiarity with the lyrical sonatas it had stemmed from.

His suit trousers followed the way of the shoes, discarded on the rocky shore, alongside his button-down shirt, his silk tie, and suit jacket. Finally naked, Atreides raised his head and looked at the Moon. His skin tingled in anticipation as he waded into the water. Pleasure akin to sexual relief engulfed him when a solitary wave covered his loins in a liquid embrace. Salty and cold, the water reached his chest, and a soft moan escaped his lips. His latest couplings hadn’t evoked such bliss.

The pull from the Tide was impossible to ignore.

Although Atreides believed in denying pleasure to sharpen the senses, he couldn’t postpone his shifting any longer. Under the blanket of the dark waters, his legs were already changing, leaving behind his human effigies for a more elegant shape. An iridescent tail formed where his feet had been a moment earlier. Atreides waited for the protective film to cover his eyes and for the gills to open on his throat, then slowly submerged his head under the surface and gulped a mouthful of water. Mediterranean saltiness replaced the air in his lungs. A set of fins protruded from both sides of his torso. The change was almost complete. He commanded his tail to push against the incoming wave, his head bobbing above the surface as he gave one last look at the marina.

The sound of steps started Atreides, forcing him to turn and face the dark walls of the castle.
“Who’s there?” he called, forcing his tail down into the water.

Excerpt 2 - Spicy (please choose one and delete the other)

His heart pounding, and his senses on high alert, Atreides took her in his arms and kissed her soundly. With a soft sigh, her mouth opened to him as his hands stroked her back, pressing her trembling body to his. He then pushed her against the green wall, his caresses becoming frantic. His fingers inched under the hem of her shirt, pulling the fabric out, freeing her skin to his touch. Like a fever, his desire grew and swelled, leaving him finally breathless.

She moaned when his hands skimmed the side of her breast. The lace of her bra was a barrier he didn’t care for, and his finger hooked underneath the elastic, moving it over the swell of her breast. Her softness filled his hand, and it made him groan in her mouth. He played with her nipple and was rewarded by her short gasp when he pinched the taut nub. His other hand followed a path down her navel, then slipped inside her jeans, brushing her over her panties. She pushed against his hand, and that was all the invitation he needed to lower the fabric and search for the warmth of her core. Ariel was ready for him, and he let his finger hover over her folds before pushing inside her. Her cry of pleasure sent him into a frenzy, and Atreides had to fight the need to tear her clothes apart. His throbbing hardness demanded relief, and he was losing control fast.

Leaning away, Ariel looked at him from under hooded lids, her lips red and swollen, and he couldn’t help but imagine her naked, bared to his sight. Her hand left the nape of his neck and skimmed his shirt, caressing his chest, then following the ridges of his pectorals, she traced patterns with her fingers. Finally, she hooked her hand under his belt, fingers reaching for the hair dusting his lower abdomen.

Her lips curved into a smile when she found no boxers underneath the jeans as if she had expected as much from him. Upon contact, Atreides thrust into her hand that felt like a glove around him, caressing him in time with his grunts, and he caressed her in return. As a second finger joined the first, she grew wetter, and her small cries and moans filled his ears, robbing him of his ability to reason.

They pleasured each other, in a tangle of hands, mouths, bodies dancing to a rhythm only they could hear. Their tongues clashed, and their kisses grew wild. Their touches became unrestrained as their pleasure mounted, rising until only the crescendo building deep inside them existed.

Ariel shattered first, and Atreides cried her name a heartbeat later. Spent, he moved his lips over hers in a more sedated kiss, feeling the need to cuddle her.

Then reality intruded…

On Writing Kissed By Fire: Notes on the Creative Process

First in a new series...I'm going to start blogging about my books as I finish them, just to document my process, research and any other notes of interest.

My latest novel, Kissed by Fire, was inspired by my never ending desire to do something different. So I delved into the sea and wrote my interpretation of mermaid mythology, mixing it with a little astrology and adding in the cursed dragon brothers I introduced in Kiss the Dragon.

Some choices I made about the sea and mermaids:

1. Ariel is real and so is the sea witch...but it all happened so very long ago. It's more myth than fact to the mermaids in Kissed by Fire. Early feedback from first readers indicated they thought I was retelling The Little Mermaid so I had to better clarify how my world worked in rewrites. (I also re-read the original fairy tale which was a mind trip as it's obvious whoever came up with that tale knew nothing about the ocean or science.)

2. I challenged myself to have Mila's thoughts and setting descriptions in the book reflect the sea. I worked hard to create new idioms, metaphors and comparisons and remove anything that was too human. I constantly considered her environment--the sights, sounds and textures that made up her world--and how that would show up in the way she spoke and thought.

3. The sea witch ties into Greek mythology and is loosely based on Oceanus, a Titan who encircled the earth. I changed Oceanus' gender to female and didn't give her a body so much as the ability to attract mass to form one. She was my favorite character to write. I loved working with all the tentacles I gave her.

4. Did you know sound travels faster underwater than it does on land? I didn't use telepathy in my mermaids because of that. They vocalize across distance a lot like whales and dolphins do. Over the years, I've done a lot of research about the ocean, and whenever possible, I design my mermaids or undersea characters based on biology vs. magic. (Obviously, the sea witch is an exception!)

5. My 'sign' for the Zodiac Shifters series was Pisces, and as I wrote, I had no idea how I would incorporate the astrology in my story. When I started Kissed by Fire, I wasn't part of Zodiac Shifters so I had to think about how to insert the ZS theme into the book.

As I researched, I discovered that the two fish used to represent Pisces are actually Eros and Aphrodite (gods of love!) in disguise as they try to get way from one of the Titans. That was the tidbit that allowed me to integrate them into the plot line...although I didn't quite see how all the astrology and mythology would tie together until I wrote it.

So there you have it. Some of the behind-the-scenes that went into Kissed by Fire. As far as the actual writing...it went a little like this...

It took two years and weeks of 16 hour days to finish this book. The characters were difficult from the beginning and they totally went off the reservation at one point...doing things I hadn't planned and refusing to cooperate with the plot I had laid out. It was one of those books where I had to follow the characters and trust I could fix any problems in edits. (Every book is different. Some come easy, some come hard. Kissed by Fire was a complete and utter a**hole!)

I thought battling with this book was difficult, but the universe saw fit to give me a lesson in what hard really looks like. In the middle of my last round of edits, my father almost died from surgical complications. I lost several weeks of working time just when I needed them the most.

My job as a writer is fairly flexible...except when I have a deadline and am pushing to get a book done and published. I somehow juggled days in the ICU with the last of my edits and got something out to Beta and ARC readers by the skin of my teeth. Somehow I made it. I'm still not quite sure how.

My dad made it, too! He's slowly recovering at home now and I'm very thankful for that!

In addition, I also workshopped parts of the story in my Odyssey winter workshop. This helped me tighten my writing and bring clarity to my world building. Kissed by Fire is the first book I've written that's been part of a professional level workshop.

Kissed by Fire was supposed to be a novella, short and sweet, but it stubbornly stretched and stretched until it turned into a full blown novel. I'm so glad it's finally DONE! Woo hoo!

As always, it's a fast-paced story with several surprises. You may think you know what's going to happen, but you don't. At one point, I wasn't even sure who was actually still alive!

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Kissed by Fire! If you want to learn more about the story, you can find the blurb etc... over here.
